Simone Forti, the Italian-American artist whose experiments broke new ground for postmodern dance, died earlier this month in Los Angeles at 91. Her gallery, Raffaella Cortese, confirmed the news on social media on Wednesday night. She battled Parkinson’s disease in her later years.
Forti pioneered a radical new approach to dance that centered the body’s untrained, intuitive movements. In her seminal series of “Dance Constructions,” initiated in 1960, participants were given a simple prop and instruction and encouraged to improvise.
