Ninety years after an unforgettable victory on American soil, legendary Italian racing driver Tazio Nuvolari is back in New York through an immersive exhibition celebrating his extraordinary career and enduring international legacy.
“Nuvolari – Comeback New York” opened October 9 at the Italian American Museum, located at 151 Mulberry Street in Manhattan’s Little Italy, and will remain on display through October 31, 2026, during Italian American Heritage Month.
Organized in collaboration with the Tazio Nuvolari Museum in Mantua and international technology partner GlobalMedia, the exhibition combines historical archives, digital innovation, and immersive storytelling to introduce new generations to one of Italy’s greatest sporting icons.
The celebration commemorates Nuvolari’s remarkable victory at the 1936 Vanderbilt Cup, held at Roosevelt Raceway on Long Island. Driving an Alfa Romeo for Scuderia Ferrari, the Italian champion defeated formidable international competition, securing Ferrari’s first victory on American soil.
Born in Castel d’Ario, near Mantua, in 1892, Nuvolari became internationally famous as the “Flying Mantuan.” His extraordinary career included 92 automobile racing victories, 69 motorcycle victories, and the 1932 European Drivers’ Championship.
The New York initiative also highlights the cultural connection between Mantua and the United States. Museum director Giuseppe Pottocar and digital curator Fabio Castagna have emphasized the importance of preserving Nuvolari’s legacy through innovative experiences that promote Italian history, technology, and tourism.
The inaugural celebration features Italian soprano Giorgia Francesconi performing alongside historical imagery.
More than a tribute to a racing champion, the exhibition celebrates Italian excellence, determination, and the enduring relationship between Italy and America.
