On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Consulate of Italy in Houston honored the memory of the millions of innocent lives lost and reflected on the power of courage in the darkest times. Consul General Lorenzini remembered Giorgio Perlasca, an Italian hero who saved thousands of Jewish lives in Budapest by risking his own, proving that one person’s bravery can change history.
We were deeply honored to hear the powerful video message from Ambassador Peronaci, reminding us that remembrance is not only about the past, but about our responsibility today: to stand against hatred, discrimination, and indifference.
This commemoration took place during the International Holocaust Remembrance Day event held in collaboration with the Holocaust Museum Houston, the American Jewish Committee (AJC), the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, and the Consulates General of Israel, Germany, Ecuador, Sweden.
This year’s program focused on the theme “Honoring the Righteous Among the Nations,” paying tribute to those who risked their lives, careers, and freedom to save Jews during the Holocaust. The evening opened with the exhibition “Beyond Duty: Diplomats Recognized as Righteous Among the Nations,” followed by a moderated panel discussion on the historical impact and contemporary relevance of diplomatic courage and the importance of these stories for our world today.
