Three public art design specialists with experience doing projects around the world are vying for the opportunity to remake the historic but controversial Columbus Circle in downtown Syracuse. The Onondaga Historical Association today is announcing the finalists for the The Full Circle Design Competition it launched last spring.
Former Mayor Ben Walsh asked OHA to facilitate a task force charged with creating a heritage park in the area where the Christopher Columbus monument stands, and the design competition emerged from that process. The finalists advanced in an invitation-only competition that reached out to 38 designers from around North American and received 17 submissions. An anonymous curatorial committee reviewed the applications, which did not include potential designs for the proposed site. That step will come in November.
