Few cities have written their own conditions as completely as Venice. For more than a thousand years it was a sovereign state that ran its own navy, minted its own coin, kept its own calendar, policed itself through institutions designed with almost paranoid care, and treated the sea as the front door of every house.
That habit of self-containment outlived the Republic. The city still measures its streets in a vocabulary no one else uses, numbers its houses by a logic that defeats most visitors, floods and drains on the rhythm of the Adriatic, and sits inside a lagoon that behaves as a near-independent ecosystem, separate enough from the open sea to keep its own balance of salt, sediment, and life. To describe Venice is to describe a world that set its own terms and, to a surprising degree, still does.
