Vintage Lamborghini Tractors Tell the Story Behind the Supercars

By: Karen Jones

Mention the name Lamborghini and most people immediately think of Italian luxury sports cars. However, Ferruccio Lamborghini, the company’s founder, started his business not in cars, but in tractors. Lamborghini was born on a farm, and his father dreamed of passing the farm on to him.

But, Lamborghini had a different idea. Showing an early talent for engines and machinery, he studied under a master blacksmith, honing his skills as an Army mechanic. During World War II, Lamborghini served in maintenance and repair for military vehicles, eventually becoming head of the department. When Italy surrendered to the Allies in 1943, German troops occupied Rhodes and most of Lamborghini’s fellow soldiers fled the island.
