Italy’s long-running debate over young people moving abroad is beginning to reveal a more encouraging side: leaving the country does not necessarily mean leaving for good. New research shows that many young Italians remain strongly connected to home – and a growing number are already returning.
A new report from Italy’s National Council for Economics and Labor, or CNEL, surveyed more than 2,500 Italians ages 18 to 34 living abroad, with 1,803 responses analyzed in its initial findings. The group is highly educated: 93% have a university degree, including 45% with a master’s-level degree, 22% with a postgraduate master’s and 12% with a doctorate.
