Zeppole are one of the few things to look forward to during March in Rhode Island. St. Patrick's Day celebrations are perhaps the only other guaranteed bright spot in a month that promises dirty snow piles, muddy lawns, false spring and too many bad, pre-season baseball games. Sure, your team might make it to March Madness and that's cool. Plus, there are birthdays, anniversaries and other celebrations but those are personal and not community-based.
Zeppole are a shared passion. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. I feel the hope of spring when I hit the road in search of what's new or familiar in the world of zeppole. Like crocus sprouting out of the dirt, zeppole have started popping up in chilled bakery cases across the state.
