Italians were among the first European settlers in California with fishermen from Northern Italy arriving in the 1830's. The Italian experience in The San Joaquin Valley begins with the discovery of gold in 1848. By 1860, the largest number of Italian immigrants lived in California.

Italian immigrants to Stockton and the San Joaquin Valley were predominately from Liguria and Tuscany and they and their descendants have had a profound influence in developing the area's cultural, agricultural and business climate. Nowhere was the Italian presence felt more strongly than in the agriculture and wine industries. By 1902 they had established the Italian Gardeners Society now celebrating its 113th year.

Today much of the food in the United States is produced in the San Joaquin Valley and the Italians are at the forefront of California Agribusiness success. The industry and legacy of these Italians has been captured by author Ralph Clark and the Pacific Italian Alliance in the book, ITALIANS OF SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, with more than 200 vintage photos. Join us at the Italian Center in Carmichael for an informative presentation of this photographic history by the author. The book will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.
