Sometimes we Italians complain that we don't have enough of a sense of national identity because of our relatively recent political unification (1861). Yet I believe that we are developing a sense of belonging to a national community. There are several indicators that point to that reality. One of them is rather visual: more and more I see my compatriots burst out singing the "Inno di Mameli", the Italian anthem, as it happened on the balcony of Mayor Ed Lee's, when the City and County of San Francisco raised the Italian tricolor in honor of June 2nd, Italy's Republic Day.
A delegation from Lucca led by the President of the Fondazione della Banca del Monte di Lucca Alberto del Carlo was with me. They spontaneously started singing the anthem as soon as the red white and green flag started flying.
