San Diego’s vibrant architectural heritage takes center stage once again with Oh! San Diego, an annual open-house event that invites the public to explore some of the city’s most significant and intriguing spaces. Hosted by the San Diego Architectural Foundation, this weekend-long celebration, running from March 7–9, offers rare access to iconic buildings, design studios, and cultural landmarks.
This year’s program highlights the interplay between architecture and community, showcasing how physical spaces shape the city’s identity. Among the many must-visit locations on Sunday, March 9, is Convivio, a unique cultural hub in Little Italy that blends heritage, hospitality, and a deep connection to San Diego’s immigrant past.
Nestled in the heart of Little Italy, Convivio Society’s Community Center, and Cafe, Amicibar, serves as a modern-day “third space,” a welcoming gathering spot distinct from home and work, where people come together to engage in conversation, share experiences, and celebrate culture. As a stop one of the featured neighborhoods for Oh! San Diego, Convivio offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the neighborhood’s rich ethnic history, particularly its deep-rooted ties to Italian immigrants and San Diegans of all stripes.
The space, designed to foster community connections, reflects the traditions of Italian cafes, where social interaction is just as important as the espresso. Through its carefully curated events, exhibitions, and partnerships, Convivio preserves and promotes the cultural narratives that have shaped Little Italy, making it a meaningful stop on this year’s tour.
As participants explore San Diego’s architectural gems, a visit to Convivio will serve as a reminder that architecture is more than just aesthetics—it is a living testament to the people and histories that define a place. Whether sipping a cappuccino in its inviting cafe or engaging with exhibits that honor the legacy of immigrants in the neighborhood, visitors will experience firsthand how architecture and design can support cultural continuity and community-building.
With Oh! San Diego offering an extraordinary glimpse into the city’s past, present, and future, Convivio stands out as an essential stop—one that beautifully illustrates how architecture, hospitality, and heritage come together to shape the identity of Little Italy.
