There are few places in North America that rival San Francisco when it comes to sampling Italian movies, thanks largely to the New Italian Cinema film festival, which for 20 years has been a marquee cultural symbol of the historical ties between Italy and the Bay Area.

This year's marathon of Italian cinema, being held Wednesday-Sunday, Nov. 16-20, at the Vogue Theatre, will showcase some of Italy's finest new directors, as well as some of its master auteurs. Several interesting documentaries have made it ashore, too.
