Local marching bands beat drums and twirled batons, a 93-year-old in a chicken suit danced atop an Italian Catholic Federation float, and a 1938 motor bus decked out in Giants colors drove through cheering crowds Sunday in the 148th Italian Heritage Parade in North Beach.
Run by a local nonprofit called the Columbus Day Parade, the parade started in 1866 and has proceeded for the most consecutive years compared with similar parades across America, many of which stopped during World War II, said Cynthia Marcucci, a volunteer with the nonprofit.
