The 'The Phillips Collection' museum, under the leadership of Director Dorothy Kosinski, has organized the first exhibition in the United States dedicated to Italian Impressionist painter Giuseppe De Nittis (1846-1884), a central figure in the history of modernism and 19th-century European art.
"I find it significant that the first museum of modern art in the United States has decided to host an exhibition on Giuseppe De Nittis, as part of the collaboration between Italy and the United States and the relentless work of both countries to strengthen our bond through art and culture," said Mariangela Zappia, Ambassador of Italy to the United States.
The exhibition "An Italian Impressionist in Paris: Giuseppe De Nittis" will be open to the public from Nov. 12 until Feb. 12, 2023. It has been organized in collaboration with the Giuseppe De Nittis Picture Gallery in Barletta, the City of Barletta and the Region of Puglia, with the support of the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington, as well as the patronage of the Ministry of Culture because of its high cultural, artistic and historical importance.
For the occasion, the Embassy and the Phillips Collection will host a delegation from the Region of Puglia and the City of Barletta with ad hoc events.
The exhibition, the brainchild of Prof. Renato Miracco, guest curator at Phillips and curator of the De Nittis Art Gallery in Barletta, shows the American public as many as 73 works from Italy, France and the United States. There are 60 works by De Nittis, 32 of them on loan from the De Nittis Pinacoteca in Barletta, the artist's birthplace. This is the first time the De Nittis Art Gallery has lent his works outside European borders. In addition to works by the Italian artist from all periods of his career, works by Degas, Manet and Caillebotte, with whom the Italian painter had particularly close relationships, will also be presented.
On the occasion of the exhibition, the first catalog on the artist has been produced in English by Prof. Renato Miracco.
