After 99 years, Garfield's Our Lady of Sorrows Parish held its last Sunday Mass on June 26. The statue of Our Lady of Sorrows is being escorted into Our Lady of Mt. Virgin Church as a sign of the two parishes merging into Our Lady of Mt. Virgin Parish on June 26. The church's parishioners will find a new home at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church in the city. "In a way this is a coming home for the folks of Our Lady of Sorrows," Our Lady of Mount Virgin trustee and parishioner Lisa Buona said.
Our Lady of Sorrows Parish was established in 1917 as a mission of Our Lady of Mount Virgin that is 115 years old. The first Masses were held in a storefront on Jewell Street, according to Kathy Skrupskis, who has worked as the religious head director for the last 16 years at Our Lady of Sorrows.
