The New Jersey Legislature is the latest group appealing to the Italian government to save its consulate in Newark. Republican Sen. Joe Kyrillos introduced a resolution Monday to keep open New Jersey's only full-fledged consulate, which is scheduled to shut in March 2014.
"This house urges the Italian government to keep open its consulate in the city of Newark so that it may continue to service needs of the many Italian immigrants and Italian-Americans residing in the state," reads the resolution.
As The Wall Street Journal first reported last month, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is moving to closethe consulate to save costs. New Jersey ranks fourth for the number of Italian-Americans in the nation and second for Italian immigrants. For services, people would have to go to New York or Philadelphia instead.
