St. Ann’s Italian Festival: A 112 Year Tradition Continues in Hoboken, New Jersey

Jul 18, 2022 1585

In 1910, immigrants from Monte San Giacomo, Province of Salerno Italy, began a tradition of faith and fellowship in Hoboken, New Jersey that has endured for 112 years – the St. Ann Italian Festival.  This evening is the first night of the 9-day novena in honor of St. Ann at the church that bears her name.  The novena mass is presided over by a different celebrant every evening and takes place at 7 PM.

Each night is dedicated to a specific intention with a special blessing.  On Tuesday, July 26th at 11 AM, a concelebrated mass is offered on the feast day of Saints Ann and Joachim followed by a procession in the streets with the faithful of the 600-pound statue of St. Ann and her daughter, the Blessed Mother. St Ann is the patroness of grandmothers, mothers, married couples and the infertile.  It is said she gave birth to the Blessed Mother when she was in a very advanced age.

On Friday, July 22nd, the five-day St. Ann Italian Festival, named Hoboken’s best outdoor festival for 2021 takes place on 7th Street between Adams and Monroe Streets with food, rides, games of chance, a beer garden, and the world famous zeppole made with a secret recipe and lots of love and devotion by the women of the St. Ann’s Guild.

The festival hours are Friday, July 22nd and Monday, July 25th 6 PM-11PM; Saturday, July 23rd, Sunday, July 24th, and Tuesday, July 26th 1 PM-11 PM.  The festival concludes with the drawing of the Grand 50/50 which awarded last year’s winner with $41,495.00!
