A statue of Mother St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, revered for her work educating children, will be brought to where followers of the Italian saint can see it on their way to prayer. The new location for the Mother Cabrini statue will be on the grounds of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, the parish that in the 1950s donated the statue to the city for placement in Mother Cabrini Park.
It is the spot where Cabrini, in 1899, founded a parochial school for the children of the neighborhood’s Italian immigrants. It was then across the street from the church. In later years, however, the church moved, and the small city park next to Newark Penn Station – an area frequented by homeless people – was fenced in a fashion similar to the nearby Peter Francisco Park.
