It is Italian American Corey Comperatore, whose family originated in Reggio Calabria, Italy, a former fire chief, who was killed in the mob attack on former U.S. President Donald Trump. Comperatore, 50, had led the Buffalo Township Fire Department in Butler County, Pennsylvania. He died while protecting his family, fatally struck by a bullet.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed his identity during a press conference. "Corey Comperatore was a father, a firefighter, and attended church every Sunday," Shapiro said. "He loved his community and, most importantly, his family. I asked his wife for permission to share what she told me: her husband died a hero, throwing himself on his family to protect them."

Sister Dawn Comperatore Schafer and her daughter Allyson recounted that during the attack, Corey protected his family as shots were fired. He threw his daughter and wife to the ground to protect them, but was hit by a bullet. "He loved us so much that he took a bullet for us," his daughter wrote on Facebook. "I just want to mourn him and thank him."

Corey's wife Helen called him a "real-life superhero." "What should have been an exciting day for my husband turned into a nightmare for our family," she wrote on Facebook. "What my precious girls had to see is inexcusable. He died as the hero he always was." From Corey's sister, a final thought: "Hatred for one man took the life of the man we loved most. He was a hero who protected his daughters, who experienced the unthinkable."
