The Italian Heritage Society of Indiana will host its annual Chapel in the Meadow worship service and picnic on Sunday. The presentation of the colors and Mass will start at 11 a.m. at the chapel, which is located at 3008 Old Hospital Road, Edinburgh. A picnic will follow. Organizers will provide a main pasta dish, as well as water, plates, napkins and cutlery. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share.
In addition to the picnic, bocce and games are planned for the event. The Chapel in the Meadow was built in the 1940s by Italian prisoners of war during World War II. From 1943 to 1944, about 3,000 Italian POWs were held at Camp Atterbury. They used leftover building supplies Camp Atterbury to create the simple white brick and stucco worship space.
