Festival-goers say Christopher Columbus part of their heritage

Arguably the most popular people inside the 2021 Columbus Italian Festival on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon were the two nice ladies sitting just inside the entrance. And it wasn’t only because Mary Bova and Patty Verrilli were the ones selling tickets to get alcohol.

With Frank Sinatra tunes playing in the background, the women greeted old friends and total strangers with an Italian charm that welcomed everyone back after the pandemic wiped out the popular festival last year. But their smiles quickly faded and their moods went from cheerful to resentful when asked about the city’s decision last year to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus in front of Columbus City Hall after 65 years.
