Over 12 hours on Saturday and Sunday at his City Hall wake, more than 7,500 people paid their respects to former Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr., the man many simply called "Buddy." and the city's longest serving mayor. Cianci, 74, died on Jan. 28. Since 1975, he had held office for 21 years.
It is the first known wake in City Hall since 1886 — when thousands reportedly came to say goodbye to Mayor Thomas A. Doyle, who died while in office. Friends and family had expected visitors might slow down around 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon, but they didn't, longtime Cianci friend Rick Simone, one of the former mayor's pallbearers, said Sunday night.
