City councilor wants to keep Columbus statue in South Providence

A Providence City Council member is proposing a resolution to keep the Christopher Columbus statue that sits in the Elmwood section of Providence where it is. Councilor James Taylor said the statue "has long been an important placemaking element to the [Elmwood] neighborhood."

The resolution put forward says the Columbus statue was "a gift to the City of Providence from the Elmwood Association" and is "historically significant." In Taylor's resolution, he says the only way the statue can be moved is if "the Elmwood neighborhood [is] consulted."
