The Columbus Day
Parade march yesterday from downtown through the North End evoked memories of Boston's longest-serving mayor, the late Thomas M. Menino, whose Italian heritage made the day special for him. "I know that he loved this day," Mayor Martin J. Walsh said. "He loved almost every day of being the mayor. ... You're coming up on one year. I'm sure it's a difficult time for the family. ... My heart goes out to the Menino family."
Menino, who served as mayor for 20 years, died Oct. 30, 2014. City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, who marched yesterday, said "He's on the minds of a lot of people today." Pressley also said the Columbus Day Parade was an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Italian-Americans who "literally built this city."
