Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, the historic, crumbling church on Mulberry Street, will open its doors for the last time on Sunday, according to Monsignor F. Stephen Pedone. Sunday's 11:30 a.m. Mass will be the last one the nearly 90-year-old edifice will host, the pastor confirmed Saturday afternoon.
The landmark Italian-American Catholic church overlooks Interstate 290 in downtown, but the building — buffeted by the elements and decades of passing highway traffic — was in need of immediate repairs that it learned Friday might not be enough to guarantee safety. "It's kind of apropos that our last Mass will be the First Communion," said Monsignor Pedone. "It's a death, but there will be a resurrection," he added, as the parish plans to merge with Our Lady of Loreto Parish on Massasoit Road.
