The Belmont Business Improvement District (BID) will host a brief press ceremony on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at 11:00 AM to celebrate the co-naming of East 189th Street at Belmont Avenue in honor of Phil Foglia, a public servant who tirelessly advocated for the Italian American community and who passed away too soon at 69 years due to complications from COVID-19 in 2020.

Raised in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx, Foglia became an attorney, community leader, and champion of Italian American causes. His 40-year legal career began at the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, where he became the Supervisor in Charge of the Public Corruption Unit. He later served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the South District of NY, a partner at a private law firm, and the Executive Vice President of an affordable housing non-profit.

He won record-setting civil settlements for those in need. He was the Chief Legal Counsel for the Italian American Defense and Higher Education Fund and a founding board member of the Italian American Museum. He was the pro bono Legal Counsel for the Bronx Special Olympics and was appointed to various panels and committees by Mayors and Governors. In 2019, he retired from the Office of the New York Inspector General as Chief of Investigations and Special Deputy Inspector General.

The son of an NYPD detective, Phil Foglia co-founded the Child Reach Foundation with Gianna and Chazz Palminteri, which has given out tens of thousands of dollars to law enforcement families who have children with special needs.
