New Dorp Lane was a little more Italian on Monday during the second annual Columbus Day Festival. As singer Joe DiGennaro crooned Italian songs into a vintage microphone, an older couple slow danced on the sidewalk.
From his seat outside John's Deli on New Dorp Lane, Carmelo Ruggiero sang along, in Italian of course. He knew all the words because he, like Christopher Columbus, came from Italy. "Columbus came to America on three boats: The Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Nina," Ruggiero said, dutifully. "Columbus Day is a special day for Italians like me."
