The state will dedicate $750,000 to erect a Big Apple statue honoring Mother Cabrini — after Mayor Bill de Blasio and first lady Chirlane McCray came under fire from Italian American and Catholic leaders for failing to recognize the patroness saint of immigrants as part of their “She Built NYC” program.
The funding and construction, announced Thursday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo will be overseen by a new 19-member commission — including many Italian American activists who’ve been critical of de Blasio and McCray. “Mother Cabrini was a great New Yorker and a great Italian American immigrant who did untold good for the people of this state, and there is no doubt she is deserving of a statue in her honor,” Cuomo said.
