About the Presentation: In celebration of the Day of Remembrance (Giorno Del Ricordo), Mario Fragiacomo and Luisa Brencella present a live musical performance and reading from the book, "That One Tin Trumpet of the Eastern Italian Border" at the Italian American Museum on Thursday, February 8 at 6:30pm. The Day of Remembrance was established by the Italian Parliament on March 30, 2004 in order to preserve and renew the memory of the tragedy experienced by Italians forced from their homes in Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia following World war II and the complex history of the Eastern Italian border.
The book, written by Luigi Maria Guicciardi with introduction by the maestro Giorgio Gaslini, is a biography of a trumpeter and native composer of Trieste, whose family came from Istria and lived through the hard times when the population of Istria was expelled from its homeland immediately after the Second World War. It describes the liberating experience of meeting with Franco Basaglia's entourage in the former OPP in Trieste in the seventies, the birth of Italian Free Jazz and cross-fertilizations with Jewish Klezmer music and the popular music of Venetian Istria. The book bears witness to the life of the trumpeter and composer Mario Fragiacomo, who was born in Trieste to an Istrian family, growing up in the shadow of the “Iron Curtain” that separated Italy from Tito's Yugoslavia in the days of the Allied Military Government following World War II.
Light Refreshments Will Be Served. Suggested donation of $10 per person. For reservations, please call the Italian American Museum at 212.965.9000, Email: [email protected] or Fax: 347.810.1028
