In Memoriam: Filomena DiRico Fosco

Jun 07, 2016 1548

Filomena DiRico Fosco. January 20, 1933 - June 5, 2016. The Italian American Museum mourns the passing of Filomena DiRico Fosco, mother of Museum Trustee and Founder, Uff. Maria Fosco. Due to Filomena's love in preserving her Italian Heritage and Culture, she was an ardent supporter of the Italian American Museum. She was one of the first contributors of items to the museum: her mother's sewing machine, currently on display in the front window of the Museum on Mulberry Street.

Filomena Di Rico Fosco was born in the village of Orsogna, (Abruzzo) Italy on January 20, 1933. She immigrated to the United States in 1958. For many years, she and her husband Antonio performed in the folkloric group "La Figlia di Jorio" in Italy, nationally touring and promoting the region of Abruzzo. In New York she performed with the folkloric group "Orsogna: Paese Mio" and "Il Coro d'Italia". She had a tremendous spirit and love for the Italian American community in New York. She was a world traveler and an avid bocce player winning 7 tournaments.

She is survived by three daughters, Alba Fosco Carlucci, Concetta Fosco Macchia and Maria Fosco, her first cousin Lou DiRico (an active member of UNICO) and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She also leaves a rich community of cousins, relatives, friends and paesani of Orsogna who loved her dearly.

She will be missed, but she will always be remembered, loved and celebrated by all those who knew her.
