Bishop Salvatore Matano will approach the door of Sacred Heart Cathedral on Jan. 2 and knock three times on the door. Bishop Robert Cunningham will open it.
The symbolic gesture will mark the beginning of two days of worship to install Matano as the ninth bishop of the Diocese of Rochester. The Jan. 2 solemn vespers, or evening prayer, will be followed by an installation Mass on Jan. 3 also at Sacred Heart Cathedral, which will officially install Matano as the diocese's new bishop.
