Marisa Merz's story is one of upward mobility. From her humble beginnings in Turin, Italy, the artist developed her own style in a diverse array of mediums, eventually becoming the sole female contributor to a prominent artistic subculture. Through the distortion and manipulation of imagery and materials, she reveals her prowess for abstraction in its various forms. And in their arrangement, she explores the dynamics between domestic and public life.
A new exhibition at the Met Breuer features many of Merz's renowned sculptures, as well as paintings, drawings and mixed media. "Marisa Merz: The Sky Is a Great Space" is the artist’s first proper retrospective in the United States, and celebrates over five decades of work.
