The founder of Savona's Plaza Pizza and a former Ulster County legislator will be honored by the Ulster County Italian American Foundation as the 2016 Signore and Signora of the Year. Emanuele Savona and Jeanette Provenzano will be honored during the annual Italian Festival taking place Oct. 9 on Kingston's Rondout waterfront. The free festival will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and feature a large variety of Italian foods, beverages, products, music and family entertainment.
The Signore and Signora of the Year are Italian Americans chosen by the foundation's executive board for their contributions to the community and their accomplishments. Savona was born in February 1940 in the town of Villabate, Sicily, the youngest of six children. At 18, he emigrated to the United States. Savona initially worked in New York City's garment district and as a baker in Brooklyn.
