PizzArte, The City’s First Pizza Gallery, Opens Today

by James Mulcahy

Think the perfect slice of pizza is a work of art? Well, PizzArte is the city's first combination pizza and art gallery – while you won't find preserved pies lining the walls, you will find that the space is a showcase for works fromNeopolitan artists. The second story of the building will be dedicated to established names from the art world – the inaugural show will feature works from Lello Esposito who is also showing at the Venice Biennial. The exhibits will rotate every 4 – 6 months and yes, the works are for sale, so you can walk out with a pie and a painting. As for the grub, there are about 10 Neapolitan pizzas on offer along with regional dishes like house-made meatballs and fried calamari. We think this opening will give birth to a new genre of gallery goer: the pizza art snob (69 West 55th St.; 212-247-3936).
