September 13 (Tuesday) 7:00 pm. The Holocaust in Italy: The Life and Times of Primo Levi. A presentation by Francesco Bonavita. Primo Levi is perhaps one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. As a survivor of the Holocaust, he went on to document the horrors of his experiences in The Periodic Table, If Not Now, When? and The Monkey's Ranch.
How can the Italian Jewish community, which has been in Italy since time immemorial, be excluded from public life, one might ask? How did Italy manage to save thousands of would-be victims at the hands of the Nazi where other countries such as France, Belgium and Poland failed miserably? These are some of the questions that will be explored by this lecture. Sonsored by Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere. 79 Howard Avenue, Staten Island. Admission: $20 suggested donation per person (includes program and reception); open to the public. Contact: Marian Rodi 718-273-7660; fax: 718-273-0020 [email protected]
