In America's historically celebrity-obsessed "culture" the highest, it is believed, to which one can aspire is to become famous. In times past this wasn't necessarily a bad thing; quite the contrary, in fact.
The craving for immortality in the minds of others drove many a person to do great things. John Adams, for example, is said to have been driven in part by a desire for recognition by his peers. Furthermore, it is said in his later years he believed he was not given his proper due by them for his part in the establishment of the American Republic.
