About Bruna Vangi

The photographs of Bruna Vangi are haunting investigations of our daily lives and what it means to be human. From portraits to street scenes, there is a sense that a powerful story lives behind every one of Vangi's photographs: an honesty and feeling of discovery that makes her pictures so compelling. A psychologist by trade, Vangi has traveled all over the world volunteering her services to help disabled and sick children, a vocation which directly complements her "photoreportage" projects. Her latest trip led her to Cambodia, where she worked with disabled and HIV-positive children, some of whom became the subjects of her latest photographs. Two years ago, she traveled to Vietnam for voluntary work with disabled children; the photographic work she did at this time won her a Women's Photography award in 2015, in Turin.

A self-taught artist, Vangi first started taking photographs in India, using an analog camera. Today she shoots digitally, but avoids Photoshop and other digital editing programs as much as possible. This fits in with Vangi's philosophy of verity and objectivity. She describes her pictures as a way to communicate information, discover social problems, and let people all over the world know about them. For Vangi, photography is not only a powerful means of communication, but "an uninterrupted research of universal beauty."

About Irena Anna Sowinska

Irena Anna Sowinska takes photography to the limits of its capabilities. Sowinska captures vistas for maximum graphic impact, with drastic framing and daring asymmetries. Her images roam all over, from cities to the sea to the sky. After shooting, she smoothes and saturates the colors, pushing them just outside the extremes of nature. With the palette thus heightened and the textures treated to amplify contrast, Sowinska creates a visual language that brings out the unreal in the most realistic of photographs.

Sownska's other great talent lies in the unexpected scene. These works are not so much landscapes as they are smaller, more individualistic moments that show a space in time notable for its peculiar juxtaposition or surreal tinge. A marble statue seems to be reacting to the romantic scenery outside the window, or a footprint disrupts an otherwise untouched beach.

Sowinska was born in Torun, Poland and currently lives in Rome, where she has adopted the Italian nationality. Her many years spent living in China, India, and South Korea have informed her photography and appreciation for different landscapes.

About the Exhibition

The World As We (May Not) Know It

Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography presents photojournalism, landscapes, and abstraction in a show that flourishes with the possibilities of the medium. On a scale from monochrome to hyper-saturation, the photographs presented are a compilation of some of the best fine art photography in today's art market, featuring nine artists from across the globe. These artists have put their finely-honed skills to the test in presenting us with an exhibition that confronts us, challenges us, and engages us with a vast, complicated, and very real world.
