Traditional Italian pastries filled Angelo's Pizza in Auburn Sunday morning. Preparing for the St. Joseph's Day Feast Celebration starts early for members of Auburn's Cultural Italian American Organization, CIAO chairman Paul Saltarello said. Every year before the feast people meet at Angelo's to make bread in the shape of a shepherd's hook, zeppole — a sweet fried dough with raisins — and sfinge, which is akin to a cream puff.
"We do that in the morning, so everything is freshly made," Saltarello said. A traditional Neapolitan cake made Sunday morning by Mario Fortunato in his Brooklyn bakery also made its way to the feast. Fortunato "is a member, a very good friend of ours, he comes to all of our events from Brooklyn," said Saltarello, adding that he made large cakes in the shape of ships for CIAO's annual Christopher Columbus Recognition Dinner.
