Much of what Americans know about Sicily comes from the 1972 movie "The Godfather," but that's only a movie, which isn't the same as history. Jefferson County Commissioners Court on Monday proclaimed October as Italian History Month.
Commissioners might easily have called it Sicilian History Month, because they appear to have made up most of the Italians who settled in Southeast Texas. Sicilians didn't all enter the United States through Ellis Island in New York harbor, like Vito Corleone in the Godfather tale.
