The annual splatter free-for-all — aka the grape stomp — is a mainstay (stain-stay?) of the Eldorado Great Italian Festival. Back in the day, the stomp was held on South Virginia Street, and the Eldorado had to pay to clean any storefronts splashed with the inky (and incredibly staining) juice and flesh of Alicante Bouschet grapes. Today, the stomp is more prudently held on a section of the plaza covering the downtown railroad trench.
On Oct. 10, folks can sign up for the public stomps that begin at 11 a.m. On Oct. 11, politicians, media personalities and other local worthies take to the tubs. Bill Schulz and Connie Wray of Alice 96.5 FM, two of Reno's top radio personalities, have participated in the celebrity stomp for nearly 15 years and have placed in the top three several times.
