Oregon's Bosco ministries inspired by saint

August 16 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of St. John Bosco, the charismatic Italian priest, juggler, musician and educator known for his joyful work among youths. Two ministries in the Archdiocese of Portland are named after him. Bosco House of Eugene welcomes young mothers, helping them get their lives together.

"Our goal is to show Christ's love in how we treat the women and children," says Lucy Organ, president of the board for Bosco House. The name of the house means St. John Bosco is a role model, says Organ. On occasion staff and organizers call on the saint for help. Church groups back the home and students from the University of Oregon Newman Center pitch in.
