The path to Third Avenue and Main Street has been anything but straight for a sculpture that will be installed there as a tribute to the community’s Italian heritage. “A Farmer’s Prayer” was unanimously accepted into the city’s public arts collection by the Walla Walla City Council on Wednesday.
The bronze statue, created by Walla Walla Valley artist Jeffrey Hill, is a suspender-clad farmer with one hand on hip and another holding a hat looking down with a basket of goods at his feet and a dog gazing upward at him. Valued at $30,500, it was created to honor the community’s generations of Italian American families and their commitment to family, church, community and the land, according to a description.
