Some people refer to Paulo Saltarello simply as "Paul." By birth he is "Paulo," the name his Italian countrymen use, but during his 51-year career as an Auburn barber, he answered to "Mr. Paul." Customers stepped into Mr. Paul's Barber Shop — which had three locations over the years, most recently 7251 Owasco Road — and walked out lifelong clients and friends.
"He made thousands of friends along the way," said Joseph Saltarello, his son. Saltarello summed up his loyal patrons with a simple rule: "You respect them, they respect you." On Dec. 19, Saltarello, 67, served his last client. Clippers in hand, he styled Dr. John Ryan, whose father, Charles, had been among Saltarello's first clients in the late 1960s.
