Ciarra Criscione, a 2019 Ridge High School graduate, will be studying abroad for two weeks this summer as the result of her outstanding score on the National Italian Exam (NIE) during the school year. Criscione will travel to Italy from July 27 through Aug. 10, to study in Recanati, a castle-studded medieval town in Italy’s history-laden Marche region.

As they do every year, Ridge Italian language students sat for the NIE, sponsored by The American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI). More than 5,500 students from across the country and Puerto Rico took the test. The exam highlights student achievement and promotes enjoyment of Italian language and culture. There are prizes – such as medals, certificates and monetary rewards – but the stuff of dreams are the scholarships for two-week study abroad programs in Italy. The top participant in each level, ranging from 1-5, gets the coveted trip.
