The third edition of the International Symposium “Italy in Transit” will take place Friday and Saturday, February 1 and 2, 2019, at Florida Atlantic University, organized by the FAU Italian Program with the John D. Calandra Italian-American Institute of New York.

The meeting gathers about 29 speakers from Florida Atlantic University, Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, New York, and Italy. Their aim is to discuss the multiple facets of Italian identity within the nation’s borders and in the Americas. They will consider many aspects that are in constant fluctuation due to internal forces, global influences, and the inexhaustible creative vitality of the Italian people.

The opening night, the Italian Consul in Miami Cristiano Musillo and the FAU Provost Bret Danilowicz will introduce the event, followed by a lecture on Pasolini’s Medea by John Kirby, Professor of Classics at the University of Miami. The evening will continue with the students of Italian from Logger’s Run middle school who will sing a mountain song to introduce the movie event. Director Renzo Carbonera will present his movie, Resina (2017), set in the alpine town of Luserna and inspired by the incredible story of the Ruda Choir. The movie was the winner of the Premio del Pubblico at last year’s Gallio Film Festival Opere Prime.

On Saturday the program will take the whole day, from 9 to 5, and will gather students, professors and experts in Italian studies. Highlight of the day will be the unveiling of a donation of the 11 paintings "Kandyskin Chronicles" by Tom Di Salvo, in the presence of his family and the College Dean, Michael Horswell. Italian American local organizations, UNICO, Order of the Sons of Italy, the Italo American Cultural Association, and Il Circolo of the Palm Beaches, will describe their friendship with the FAU Italian program and their activities.
