An hour and a half drive northwest of Los Angeles might seem a long way to go for some Italian, especially given the great modern and traditional, Southern and Northern Italian cuisine within the city, but I'm going to try to make the case that Boccali's Pizza and Pasta in the Ojai Valley is worth the trek.
First of all, 90 minutes is 90 minutes whether you're driving at 75 mph up beautiful PCH or crawling inch by inch through Mid-City. The difference is that when you get to Boccali's, there's parking. Oh, and it's free.
DeWayne and Marilyn Boccali have operated the restaurant since 1986, serving fresh produce from their own farm in the Upper Ojai Valley. DeWayne's grandfather, from whom the recipes are derived, left Lucca, Italy for Santa Barbara (about 30 miles from Ojai) in 1898.
