Pennsylvania-founded frozen treats purveyor Rita’s is setting up shop in Alameda this fall, nicely timed to the local sunny season. The chain is known for its frozen custard and signature Italian ices, which true fans call by the OG regional name “water ice.” The location, the closest one yet to San Francisco, is the South Shore Center (523 South Shore Center West, Alameda).
A truck carrying hundreds of pounds of frozen cheese caught fire on a stretch of Bay Area road Monday morning, and while no injuries were reported, the event can still be described as tragic. It’s unclear how the truck caught fire, but it pulled off 680 near the off-ramp to Highway 262, where the Fremont Fire department was able to extinguish the blaze, though not before it became a fondue truck.
