Sorry Minneapolis, Eataly just isn't that into you right now. Eataly, an Italian food hall concept backed by celebrity chef Mario Batali that mixes several restaurants with retail and a cooking school, had been a wish-list favorite of real estate brokers and others wondering how to fill the lower levels of the downtown Minneapolis Macy's store. Macy's officially closed the location Sunday night.
Eataly doused that idea this week. Spokeswoman Brianna Buford said, "While Eataly is always looking to expand into new markets, there are currently no plans to open a location in Minneapolis at this time." The concept appears to be targeting larger markets with more foot traffic than downtown Minneapolis can muster: Eataly's North American markets include New York, Boston and Chicago, with future locations set for Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Toronto.
