Popular neighborhood pizza joints are as common in places like New York City or Chicago as 24-hour public transportation, yet even Manitou Springs has its own local favorite in Savelli's Pizza, Pasta, Subs. Much remains unchanged since the locally-owned pizzeria opened in 1998. The smiling faces that greet and serve are new, but the varied menu, the good quality and the tired décor are as comforting as, well, a home-cooked meal.
When my kids were younger, Savelli's was the place to go after sporting events or to celebrate report cards. It was affordable, reliable and convenient to home. In the summer we vied with tourists for tables, but it always felt like a place to meet friends for pizza. Even though it had been years since I last walked through its doors, Savelli's still has that same feeling. It helped that we saw a few familiar faces on our recent visit.
