The Belmont Business Improvement District (BID) will host a brief press ceremony on Monday, May 8, 2023 at 11:00 AM to celebrate the co-naming of Hughes Avenue at Crescent Avenue in honor of Michele “Mike” Greco, a staple of the Bronx Little Italy community and legendary owner of the famous Mike’s Deli located in the Arthur Avenue Retail Market for over 60 years.

Mike sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 89, and his death was mourned by the hundreds in the community, including Chef Emeril Lagasse and Actor Chazz Palminteri. Originally from Calabria, Italy, Mike first came to the Bronx in 1947 with his 17-year-old twin brother with just $50 in his pocket. In the early 1950s, he opened Mike’s Deli, working seven days a week to rightfully earn the delicatessen’s stellar reputation.

His love for life and larger-than-life personality were always on display along with his acclaimed mozzarella. Mike was often heard singing over a microphone in the Retail Market, interacting with customers, and was known for putting on a show. With Mike’s exuberance, the deli quickly became a favorite stop for many mayoral, gubernatorial, and presidential campaigns along with happily serving countless neighbors, tourists, and celebrities.

For over 60 years, he took pride in the quality and consistency of the deli’s products and serving his customers. Mike embraced the American Dream, supported his family, including four children, and offered mentorship, support, advice, and inspiration to all who knew him. He received many honors over the years, including Merchant of the Year, Citations of Merit from Bronx Borough Presidents, National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) Achievement Award, and a posthumous award from Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America. Mike had an immense passion for the Bronx and his Italian American culture.

The street co-naming will be both a recognition for the Greco family, symbolizing Mike’s spirit, passion for the community, and strong work ethic, as well as a kind remembrance of a friend who could always be counted on for a good word and a good meal.
